Tricks in Writing on The TOEFL Test

Writing is a writer task. It is not an assignment to marketers, sales persons, or else. Thus, if you want to be the writer, here some tricks you can practice are:

1. Knowing lots of vocabulary lists is helpful. But, if you make paragraphs without concerning well-turned structures at the right time and in the right context, the ones will give nothing.


2. Presenting examples or evidences to prove your statement is great. Expressing an idea in different phrases makes your essay flat.

3. Think what readers agree or disagree with. Remember! The reader is not interested in what you can do for yourself. But, he/she will be interested in what you can do for them.

4. Use active voices as well as you can do. It is true because they show the agent in subject positions. For example, “He hit me.” Readers would prefer it to “I was hit by him.” You have to avoid to be as much as you can do.

5. Avoiding dangling participles, redundancy, and double negatives is good. “It is unnecessary” is well-structured rather than “It is not unnecessary” in the double negative. Also, “My parents also advice waiting my uncle.” Readers would prefer it to “My parents also advice waiting my uncle too.” Moreover, the last structure you have to avoid is dangling participles, for example” “Shivering with cold, Marry covered herself with a coat.” Here, the verb “shiver” modifies Marry because she is the only one who is shivering. The structure “Marry covered herself with a coat and shivered with cold” is grammatical.

6. Contractions like it's, I'm, and so on make your essay more lively. That shows conversational situations where people talk.


7. Over-exclaim and over punctuation marks show your writing poor and cheap constructions.

8. Use simple statement by empowering the period.

9. Should you avoid hyphenating words if it is a must? “Turn-off TV!” Here, the hyphenating word is unnecessary because you can also say “Turn TV off!” Thus, it is clear that the structure needs the hyphenating mark. For example, Check-in is at 10 a.m. Here, the word “check” and preposition “in” regards as the noun instead of the verb.

10. You repeat the same words. Don't make me laugh. It shows that you are poor vocabularies.
