Where Is the Subject? Tips in Writing TOEFL

Subject-verb agreements and verb-object agreements will be discussed here.

1. Using simpler expressions is very useful.

I guess that it is very important for Marry to study hard everyday. (Not simple)
Daily studying is very important for Marry. (Simple)



2. Pronouns like possessive adjectives have to agree with nouns regarding as its antecedent.

A student should honor their teachers. (Incorrect)
A student should honor his/her teachers. (Correct)

3. The verb usually agrees with the subject.

Each of the men put into jail. (Incorrect)
Each of the men puts into jail. (Correct)

4. Expressions of quality make the verb agree with the object instead of the subject.

All of the English exercise book are mine. (Incorrect)
All of the English exercise book is mine. (Correct)

5. The subject coming after the verb must agree with the verb although the word seems the object position. But, truly it regards as the agent.

On the table is my English exercise books. (Incorrect)
On the table are my English exercise books. (Correct)

6. Possessive pronouns sometimes are written without a complete word.

I finally find my English exercise books. Where are you? (Incorrect)
I finally find my English exercise books. Where are yours? (Correct)
